Control Plane Windows Without Heroics

Upgrade weekends fail when nobody measured webhook latency under load beforehand.

Control plane maintenance is often treated as a calendar event instead of an engineered window. The difference shows up when admission webhooks time out under peak traffic or when etcd compaction coincides with a rollout.

Before any version bump, capture baseline metrics for API server latency, webhook duration, and scheduler queue depth. Rehearse the upgrade on a sibling cluster that mirrors production density—not an empty sandbox. Document abort criteria in writing so the night shift is not inventing policy at 02:00.

Heroic recoveries make good stories. Quiet, measured windows make durable platforms.
